Subject: Usage guidelines for SPORTSOC

  Welcome!

You're now on the SportSoc Listserv discussion list. The amount of
activity on this group depnds on having members use the network to ask
questions, seek information, comment on current events, etc.

To join in on the conversation, send E-mail to SPORTSOC@TEMPLEVM or to
SPORTSOC@VM.TEMPLE.EDU. Upon receipt, your message will automatically be
send to everyone else who is subscribed to SportSoc. Other SportSoc
subscribers may then choose to respond to you directly, or to respond to
the entire network (again, through me).

Comments regarding this group can be sent either to

     Judith Stull (nels88@vm.temple.edu)

        or

		INFORMATION ABOUT THE "SPORTSOC"
		    E-MAIL DISCUSSION GROUP

Welcome to new members of SPORTSOC, and hello again to old members. My name
is Mike Malec, and I am the person who "supervises" this list. If you have
any problems using SPORTSOC, please feel free to contact me for assistance.

This memo provides an overview of SPORTSOC and some notes about using this
network. Veteran e-mailers may find much of this redundant; for that I
apologize. Novices may find some of this unclear; for that, too, I apologize,
and ask that you notify me about any points that are unclear.

NOTE: You may want to print and save the following for reference purposes.

	++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

SPORTSOC is an e-mail discussion group for anyone interested in the
sociological aspects of sport. It was originally begun for the membership
of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport, but it is now open
to anyone who is interested. As of Sept. 8, 1995, we have more than 350
members in 19 countries.

One can join this group by sending a message to the following address:

	LISTSERV@TEMPLEVM.BITNET
		or to
	listserv@vm.temple.edu	   ------>>>>{Capitalization is optional}

The message should simply say:

	SUB SPORTSOC Your Name
e.g., SUB SPORTSOC John Doe

	========================================================

The following are small points of ettiquette that should generally be
observed by list members. Please contact me if you wish to suggest amendments
to this memo.

1. REMEMBER that when you post a message to SPORTSOC, you are sending
the message to the ENTIRE list -- more than 350 people. Therefore, please
distinguish between messages that you wish to send to the entire group
(these get sent to SPORTSOC@TEMPLEVM.BITNET or to SPORTSOC@TEMPLEVMS.EDU)
and messages that you wish to send to an individual (these get sent to
that individual's personal e-mail address). Sending "personal" mail to
the entire list clutters the system and wastes others' time.

2. FOLLOWING FROM #1: Be especially careful when you "reply" to a posting.
On most computer systems, a "reply" goes to the entire list. So if you
really mean to respond to the one individual who sent the original message,
you probably want to "send" your comment; you probably do NOT want to "reply."
(I say "probably", because on a few systems, things operate in the reverse
fashion! [Nobody said life was easy.]) If you're unsure, check with your
local compter center.

3. Postings should contain the real name of the sender, either in the header
or the body of the message. No anonymous postings, please!

4. Personal attacks and insults are prohibited. Avoid flaming!

5. SPORTSOC is a vehicle for the discussion of the sociological aspects of
sport. SPORTSOC also serves as a discussion medium for the members of the
North American Society for the Sociology of Sport. As such, members should
NOT use the network for commercial purposes. Those who do so may be removed
from the list.

Some useful things to know about LISTSERV:

SPORTSOC, like many e-mail discussion groups, operates through something
called a ListServer (LISTSERV). The LISTSERV we use is housed at Temple
University; there are many others at many other host sites. LISTSERV
receives, processes, and sends all of the thousands of messages that its
users transmit. Each LISTSERV handles many, many discussion groups.

Normally, once you join a group, you needn't think much about the LISTSERV,
but from time to time, you may want to use some of its other capabilities.
Here are some options that might be useful. (REMEMBER: All of the following
commands get sent to LISTSERV, not to SPORTSOC!!!)

1. To receive an acknowledgment of any message that you send to the list:

	SET SPORTSOC MAIL ACK

2. To undo the previous option, that is, to receive no acknowledgment, and
to insure that you will NOT get a copy of your own message:

	SET SPORTSOC MAIL NOACK

3. To turn off your mail temporarily (for example, while you are away on
vacation):

	SET SPORTSOC MAIL POSTPONE

NOTE: To undo this command (re-enabling you to receive mail from the list),
send one or the other of the first two commands (ACK or NOACK); this will
undo the POSTPONE setting.

4. To change the e-mail address where your messages are sent (for example,
when you move from one site to another):

	SET SPORTSOC OLD-ADDRESS TO NEW-ADDRESS
e.g., SET SPORTSOC name@node1.edu TO name@node2.edu

But BE CAREFUL with the spelling of your new address: if you misspell it,
you may never again see the messages!)

5. To quit the list:

	SIGNOFF SPORTSOC

6. To get a copy of the membership of the list:

	REVIEW SPORTSOC

This will give you the name and e-mail address of everyone who belongs to the
group. Note that the Review option enables anyone to identify you as a member
of the list. If you wish to conceal your name from the Review:

	SET SPORTSOC CONCEAL

(But remember that our etiquette suggests that you DO identify yourself when
you post a message!)

         =======================================================

I have published a list of other Internet Discussion Groups.
See the Journal of Sport and Social Issues, 19(1) Feb., 1995, pp. 108-114.
A few examples follow:

electronic bulletin board for the North American Society for the Sociology
of Sport. You can reach this list at:
	SPORTSOC@TEMPLEVM.BITNET

SPORTMGT deals with Sports Management. You can reach this list at:
	SPORTMGT@UNBVM1.BITNET

SPORTPC deals with Personal Computers in Sport. You can reach this list at:
	SPORTPC@UNBVM1.BITNET

REMEMBER: To JOIN a list, you must first contact the LISTSERV@nodename
(where "nodename" is what follows the @ sign in the above addresses). The
message that you send to the LISTSERV is just two short words, followed by
your name:

	SUB LISTNAME Your Name
e.g., SUB SPORTSOC Jane Doe

(where LISTNAME is the name of the list to which you are subscribing (e.g,
SPORTPC or WISHPERD or SPORTSOC).

To remove yourself from a list, you must again contact the LISTSERV@nodename
and send a simple message:

	SIGNOFF LISTNAME Your Name
e.g., SIGNOFF SPORTSOC J. Doe

(where LISTNAME is the name of the list to which you are subscribing (e.g,
SPORTPC or WISHPERD or SPORTSOC).

	------------------------------------------------------

In a different vein: To get a list of ALL the lists (not just the sport
lists, send the following message to any listserver:

	LISTS GLOBAL

You will receive a long (c. 80 pages?) reply.

	-------------------------------------------------------

To get a list of the members of SPORTSOC, send a message to
LISTSERV@TEMPLEVM.BITNET The message should say

	Review Sportsoc
